Multi Location and Camera Platform Aerial Shoot

Last August we were contracted to shoot aerials for Freddy Flintoff’s new television show – Freddy Fries Down Under. Originally aired in the UK on Channel 4, Freddy Fries Down Under is currently airing in Australia on Channel 10.

The show follows the journey of Freddy Flintoff as he travels around Australia frying up a storm. The travelling theme of the show meant that the aerials that were sought after were mostly car/food-van tracking shots and establishing shots. This meant we needed to provide a multi-location, multi-camera platform solution.

The solution that ended up being the best balance of full coverage, while still fitting within budget limitations; was a combination of drones, helicopters and camera platforms. The projects multiple components were:

a three-hour shoot over the Great Barrier Reefs in a Jet Ranger helicopter, using a Shotover F1 gimbal and Sony F55 with an Arri Alura 18-80mm.

a five-hour shoot from the Gold Coast in a Squirrel helicopter using a Cineflex V14 gimbal.

a two-hour shoot from Melbourne in a Robinson R44 helicopter using our custom-built helicopter gyro rig.

and a one day shoot in the Gold Coast region using our Inspire 1 drone.

All shooting was completed over the course of 2 weeks working around both poor weather and helicopter availability. It was a great project to be involved with and it is fantastic to see the show finally being aired on Australian TV.

DJI Inspire 1

DJI’s Inspire 1 Drone, 3.5kg

As of the 28th of September 2016 CASA is proposing to introduce new drone regulations that will make amendments to the existing regulations to make it easier to operate a smaller drone commercially within Australia. Although there has been widespread media coverage of the upcoming proposed regulations the finer details have been lacking and certainly need clarification in the marketspace, we have listed a few more details on the new regulations that we feel have been ignored in the general media and what it might mean to you as a someone wishing to contract an operator to undertake some drone work.

  • The operator must have an Aviation Reference Number and be register their drone with CASA
  • CASA must be given notification 5 days prior to a job being undertaken
  • It must not be operated over 400ft or 121m
  • It must not be operated within 30m or overhead of the general public or populous area
  • No operations within 3nm or 5.6km of a controlled aerodrome or helipad (this is a key one to remember as Brisbane and most cities now have hospital helipads located centrally within them so this rules most of Brisbane CBD and surrounding suburbs)
  • The craft must be sub 2 kg, this rules out larger drones such as the DJI Inspire 1 (as pictured) and larger safer 6 and 8 rotor machines that carry better quality still and video cameras.

So what does this really mean to you the contractor?

If you hire somebody to do drone work for you and they only have the sub 2kg certification. You will not only be limited by where and when they can fly it but you will be limited to a much smaller camera with lower quality video and low megapixel still images with no lens options other than what the drone comes with. You may also engage a less experienced operator with limited experience no formal training and possibly no insurance.

Why hire a more experienced, certified and insured operator like us?

We have been CASA certified for over 4 years now and been in the aerial photography business for the last 10 years. We are not hobbyists, we are professional photographers and cinematographers with wide industry experience and specialise in Aerial Photography and cinematography wether it be from drone or manned helicopter. Although we sometimes use smaller craft below 2 kg for our budget product we also have a complete fleet of 5 drones that will suit any aerial job you can imagine with larger drones that will accomodate Professional digital SLR cameras up to 80mp and cinema cameras with a host of lenses to suit and a professional and experienced team we can accomodate any aerial job big or small.

Feel free to contact us today to find out more about this subject or more about about our services or view some examples of our work here “Latest Works”

It is amazing how the methods of capturing aerial imagery have changed so drastically in less than a decade. Our RnD Manager Shea Brown entered the industry in Canada when fully manual remote control helicopters were the only means of lifting a camera system for low altitude aerial photography. Since then the capabilities of aerial lifting platforms (drones) have improved as fast as the computers they use to fly. Drones now have automation, redundancy and far more accuracy, making them a much more usable and safe tool.

South East QLD is easily one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Topping off the breathtaking natural landscapes is the one and only river city.

Brisbane is a delight to shoot, not only from the helicopter and drone, but also the ground. This panorama was shot while shooting for a new development. We took the drone up to our operating ceiling of 400ft and captured this epic panorama of Brisbane CBD.

Showcasing a development from the drone is a great way to get both high overalls and intimate shots. Most of the time when shooting a site, the cost of shooting from either a helicopter or a drone works out about the same. One large advantage of shooting from a drone over a helicopter is the ability to stay on site for a long enough period of time to capture the changing light. This is possible with a helicopter, however it is far less cost effective. For more information about drone or helicopter shoots don’t hesitate to contact us!
