As this year comes towards a close, we thought it would be a good time to look back on some of the exciting projects we were a part of in 2018.

The year started with an international shoot in Nauru, or as the locals call it – ‘The Pleasant Island.’ We were commissioned by an Indian company – Sterling and Wilson to shoot photos and video of two newly installed 3MW Generators and the associated Switchgear. This was one of their most challenging projects from a logistical standpoint and they wanted to document the finished product. We traveled over with two drones (redundancy) and our ground camera gear.  We stayed at ‘Budapest Hotel’ located on the opposite side of the country to the location of the newly installed power station. The trip around the entire coast of Nauru can be made in 20 minutes, we figured a 10-minute commute to the site was reasonable.

Over the course of the year, we have done many drone shoots for Television Commercials. Our Inspire 2 drone with the X5S camera system gives production companies the versatility they desire with high bit rate footage that cuts in with RED ground-based cameras very nicely.  Shooting all over SEQ and northern NSW for Isuzu, we have had the pleasure of working in some of the regions most spectacular locations, with some incredibly talented directors, producers, and precision drivers. Not to mention the rest of the huge crew required to create these engaging and emotive commercials. Below are some screen grabs from a few of our shots posted on the Isuzu Ute Youtube channel.

This year we have also been involved in many film shoots that require large gimbals mounted to helicopters. We have utilised the Shotover F1, GSS and Cineflex Elite. Each of these helicopter gimbal systems has their pros and cons, however the Cineflex Elite stood out to us a great gimbal that could travel relatively easy, and also has the pedigree and capabilities that our clients require for high-end film work. In August we took the leap, traveling to California in the United States to purchase our own system to have in-house. Equipped with an Arri M, this is the first 5 – axis gimbal system in QLD to support 4K video output. We are also working on some research and development of the system that we will be excited to share more on in the near future.

A helicopter gimbal job that stood out this year was a television commercial we shot working together with Brisbane’s’ Brother and Co and Cartel for the University of Southern Queensland. This TVC required very precise orthographic shots in a variety of locations with a Gimbal Operator(Anthony), DOP, Director, Camera Assistant and Client on board the helicopter. Below are some frame grabs from this 30-sec cut that was the initial release from the ‘Become more’campaign.

This year we also achieved another milestone for our drone ops in Brisbane CBD, successfully being granted permission from CASA and Air Services to operate above 400ft to take view perspective view photography for the new residential tower – The One, located in the new Brisbane Quater development. This approval process was very involved and took over 6 weeks, however flying the drone legally at over 700ft AGL in Brisbane CBD was worth the effort. For this Job we also shot a 360-degree panorama of the top level at dusk with the helicopter, doing this with a drone with the current regulations would not have been achievable. Below are some of the images that were captured from the drone and heli.

We were also lucky to be involved with shooting render back-plate and spherical panoramas for Brisbane’s new Queens Wharf development. We shot on a stunning evening where 1 William Street lit up, looking absolutely spectacular! Below is one of the frames from a spherical panorama that was captured.

This year our work has spanned most of the country. Whether it was shooting 6K Shotover F1 helicopter gimbal footage of the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, drone video of agricultural equipment being offloaded at Fremantle Port in Western Australia or 450MP Spherical panoramas for Virtual Reality in Victoria, clients are happy to send us great distances if it means getting the shots they require to the standard they require, on the first shoot.

We are looking forward to the next year of challenging and exciting projects, where we continue to strive to capture stunning photos and video on time and to brief. See you on your next project.

When the weather is clear and the air is crisp there is no better time for aerial photography. We strapped a GoPro to the top of our Sony a7Rii to share some point of view footage of what a helicopter shoot is like. Shooting from a helicopter lets us capture angles that just aren’t possible from other platforms like drone and pole. A lot of planning goes into a helicopter shoot, but we decided to just show you the fun bits.

On most clear days you will find us in the skies over SE Queensland. This gives us the opportunity to capture amazing stock aerial images. Some of these images would cost around $1000 to capture on a one-off tailored shoot. This price factors in the cost of the helicopter, photographer, pilot, and post.

We have collated our stock images into an ever-growing library at

Next time you are in need of some breathtaking content to take your report, IM or advertisement to the next level for a relatively inexpensive price, Stock Photos Australia should be your first port of call.

If your planning to fly your drone in the Gold Coast between the between the 25th of March and the 18th of April, your safest bet is to just leave it on the ground.
However, if you are compelled to take to the skies there are extra restrictions in place for the Commonwealth Games.

Pictured, is a map of the Total Restricted Areas (TRA) (Yellow) that will be enforced by police for the entirety of the games. These areas were collated from this Aeronautical Information Circular as well as existing restricted flight areas around helicopter landing sites, non-towered aerodromes (orange) and towered aerodrome (Red). There are also additional restrictions in place for events like the Triathlon and marathon and we encourage you to check out the  AIC if you want more detailed information.

We are looking forward to hosting the Commonwealth in SE Queensland and hope everyone makes an effort to keep the skies safe.

Earlier this year we were involved in capturing the Shotover helicopter aerials for a stunning future development in Circular Quay.
We shot on a Shotover F1, with a Sony F55 and Arri-Optimo 18-80mm.
Above is the finished product.

Time-lapse photography is powerful tool for evoking emotion and showing the passing of time. Below is a couple of examples of some of the time-lapses we have recently captured. Get in touch with us today to discuss your next project.

On Wednesday the 26th of July we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to shoot the mammoth 333-meter long super-carrier, USS Ronald Reagan.

The Port of Brisbane Corporation commissioned this shoot to memorialise the largest US military ship docking in Brisbane in over 2 years.

We liaised with the US embassy, Port of Brisbane Corporation and air traffic control in order to make this shoot happen.

We were given clearance to operate in airspace surrounding the giant ship except directly above it. It turns out there will always be some restrictions in place around a nuclear-powered warship.

Below are some of the shots that were captured of the immense vessel.

Delivering a client a great set of images takes more than just having a skilled photographer with the right equipment.

The final and one of the most important steps in the process of delivering stunning images to our clients, is the post processing of the raw images.

Post processing can make a great image even better, however, when deadlines are tight sometimes waiting for idyllic conditions to shoot a great image is not always an option.

When this is the case, extra time spent processing the raw image files can make all the difference between a photo looking okay or fantastic.

Below is the before and after of an image shot on a hazy evening from Newstead back towards the city.

The commercial real estate industry is fast-paced field where deadlines are tight and can change at a moments notice.

Aerial Advantage is structured in every way to be able to rapidly respond to any job request whether it be a ground, drone or helicopter shoot.

We are situated on the tarmac of Archerfield airport – a stones-throw away from the hanger where the helicopters we utilise are kept.

We have a commercial, night rated pilot on staff who knows Brisbane’s airspace like the back of his hand. This on-hand experience helps us provide accurate quotes without consulting any other businesses, allowing us to get your purchase order finalised as quickly as possible.

We have multiple full-time teams of photographers/drone pilots that are ready to shoot when the weather clears, processing your images as fast as possible -usually delivering the finished product the same or next business day.

We currently complete a myriad of different jobs on a regular basis for large commercial real estate firms like CBRE, Cushman and Wakefield and, Savills.

News Corp recently put together this video for ONE Palm Beach on the Gold Coast.

We had the role of shooting both the aerials and level perspective views for this project.

The aerials were shot on our mid-level inspire 1 drone over an afternoon/sunset and the following sunrise/morning. We were very happy with the emotive impact they had on the final piece.

The view perspectives we shot on our large drone with a sony A7R2 professional digital camera. These were shot primarily for print applications and as back plates for renders. But we were also happy with how they were incorporated into the video.
