CASA’s new sub 2kg drone regulations & what it means to you
DJI’s Inspire 1 Drone, 3.5kg
As of the 28th of September 2016 CASA is proposing to introduce new drone regulations that will make amendments to the existing regulations to make it easier to operate a smaller drone commercially within Australia. Although there has been widespread media coverage of the upcoming proposed regulations the finer details have been lacking and certainly need clarification in the marketspace, we have listed a few more details on the new regulations that we feel have been ignored in the general media and what it might mean to you as a someone wishing to contract an operator to undertake some drone work.
The operator must have an Aviation Reference Number and be register their drone with CASA
CASA must be given notification 5 days prior to a job being undertaken
It must not be operated over 400ft or 121m
It must not be operated within 30m or overhead of the general public or populous area
No operations within 3nm or 5.6km of a controlled aerodrome or helipad (this is a key one to remember as Brisbane and most cities now have hospital helipads located centrally within them so this rules most of Brisbane CBD and surrounding suburbs)
The craft must be sub 2 kg, this rules out larger drones such as the DJI Inspire 1 (as pictured) and larger safer 6 and 8 rotor machines that carry better quality still and video cameras.
So what does this really mean to you the contractor?
If you hire somebody to do drone work for you and they only have the sub 2kg certification. You will not only be limited by where and when they can fly it but you will be limited to a much smaller camera with lower quality video and low megapixel still images with no lens options other than what the drone comes with. You may also engage a less experienced operator with limited experience no formal training and possibly no insurance.
Why hire a more experienced, certified and insured operator like us?
